Sydney life is fabulous, but there is so much more on our doorstep just a short drive away
#1 Montague Island
From Narooma you can visit Montague Island, a fantastic dive (and snorkelling) site where you can swim or dive with loads of seals. It is just a 5 hour drive south of Sydney, which makes this an attractive weekend away destination. The dives offer plenty of interaction with seals, sharks and bull rays and in the winter the boat trip there also offers opportunities to see many of humpback whales too.

#2 South West Rocks
This is a fantastic destination for a long weekend. South West Rocks is about 5-6 hours north of Sydney and offers great diving at the famous Bubble Cave where Grey Nurse Sharks and turtles are commonly sighted. =

#3 Nelson Bay
#3 Nelson Bay
A short 2 and a half hour drive north from Sydney brings you to the gorgeous Port Stephens area. Even if you don't scuba dive there is plenty to see here. The diving however is superb. The shore diving blows your mind - you can't work out which direction to look since there is so much to see!

#4 Forster
Not much further north than Nelson Bay is Forster and Seal Rocks. The Tuncurry region is beautiful as is the diving. Grey Reef sharks are what this site (like so many others) special. They are an endangered species but luckily for us there are some dive sites where they are almost guaranteed. These sites are inside a marine sanctuary and so hopefully they get the level of protection needed so that the sharks may continue to thrive

#5 Solitary Islands
I would class this higher on the list had it not been for the distance! Solitary Islands are a fantastic dive site but it requires a 9-10 hour drive north of Sydney. The floor is literally carpeted in anenomes and clown fish. It is something really quite special. There are also grey nurse sharks, wobbegong sharks and the other usual suspects. But what makes this area so special is the abundance of tropical fish and vast populations of clownfish.
